"The flying arrow is at rest." — Zeno of Elea, as reported by Aristotle, Physics VI.9, c. 450 BC

— Listen on Spotify ↗

Lie on your back in a field on a summer afternoon and watch a single cloud. It seems to hang there without moving. Look away for a minute, look back, and it has become something else. The horse is now a boat. The boat is coming apart at one end.

You never actually see it change. You only notice that it has.

Zeno of Elea built a famous puzzle out of this. An arrow in flight, he said, is at every single instant exactly where it is. In no instant is it moving. So when does it move? Philosophers argued about it for two thousand years, and mathematicians needed calculus before they could offer an answer most of them accepted.

Clouds make the puzzle feel ordinary. So do children, who never seem to grow while you watch them and are suddenly taller than the door frame. So do we. Nobody wakes up one morning as a different person. It happens in moments too small to catch, and then an old photograph shows us the whole distance.

You never see yourself change. You only notice that you have.

There is something gentle in that. It means the version of you that feels stuck today is already moving, slowly, the way clouds move. It also means that the things we love are moving too, and that the time to look at them properly is now.

Clouds have no plan and no hurry. They drift, change shape and eventually rain somewhere far away. It is not a bad model for a Sunday afternoon.
